Wing Chun Fist

Wing Chun is a highly condensed and simplified boxing art from China. It combines both hard and soft elements of martial arts into a relatively quickly learned and effective martial art and self defense system. Wing Chun relies on logic and the body's natural structure rather than brute strength to overcome an opponent.

In Chengdu

I came to Chengdu with the plan to study chinese. I was certified to teach Wing Chun just before leaving Seattle, but was not aware of the potential market for the art in Chengdu, until I arrived. Now, I'm happy to offer these classes so that I may better my own understanding of the art, as well as teach others.

Sifu John Lapham

I share the name John Lapham with my father, who was also my Sifu. This fact in itself should explain a good portion of my history in the art. That is, that I've been exposed to it for a long time. I was not forced into it, but natrally developed an interest over time. I generally credit my self for about seven solid years, but I've no idea how long exactly. I don't even remember learning a lot of the first year work. I spent more and more time over the years until I finally managed to put the training before just about everything on the list of priorities. Now, I'm teaching. For more details check out the "Sifu Biography" page.

Format

Our classes here are relatively casual. For one, we will be training outside which means a number of things. We won't have access to large, specialized equipment, we must cope with the elements, and develop patience when confronted by the countless curious onlookers.

As well, there are no uniforms, so please make sure you have some comfortable clothes and shoes (toes preferred).

Fitness and stretching outside of the regular stance and technique training is not part of the class. This is because everyone had different bodies and goals. I recommend showing up a little early if you'd like to warm up. As well, I'm happy to give advise, as I have been studying fitness for a long time, and there are some exercises that will help or hinder your Wing Chun training.

Lastly, I believe in self discipline. I will not be disciplining people, but I can assure you that training in a martial art will help you to develop your own discipline.

We train every Monday and Wednesday from 16:00 to 17:45. Our location is next the river just north of bar street on the north side of Sichuan University campus. If you've found the great "Restaurant of Bridges" than you are almost there.
